Our Approach

We examine AI's transformation of society through rigorous scholarship and participatory research—synthesizing technical advances, cultural responses, and educational implications to build knowledge that serves the public good. Our work bridges academic research and community practice, ensuring that AI development remains accountable to societal needs and planetary boundaries.

Research Anchored in Educational Transformation

With expertise in educational technology and systems design, we recognize education as humanity's primary adaptive mechanism. Our research begins with SDG 4: Quality Education—not as a narrow sectoral concern, but as the meta-system through which societies develop the capabilities to navigate technological change. We investigate how AI transforms knowledge creation, skill development, and collective learning across formal and informal settings.

Three Core Research Programs

Program 1 Image

Preparing Society for AGI & Transformative AI

We develop frameworks for navigating the transition to artificial general intelligence and other transformative AI systems. Drawing from complexity science and educational theory, we examine: adaptive capacity building, cognitive complementarity between humans and AI, institutional resilience strategies, and the pedagogical shifts required for a world of accelerating capability. Our research translates long-term AI trajectories into near-term educational and policy interventions.

Research Translation & Public Scholarship

We synthesize findings from AI research, learning sciences, and social studies of technology—transforming technical insights into actionable knowledge for educators, policymakers, and communities. Our weekly research digests, evidence briefs, and impact assessments bridge the gap between frontier AI development and societal understanding, ensuring public discourse remains grounded in empirical evidence rather than hype or fear.

Cultural Patterns & Ethical Infrastructures

We document how diverse societies interpret, adopt, and transform AI through their own value systems and knowledge traditions. This comparative research reveals alternative pathways for AI development— from Indigenous data governance to Global South innovation models—while building ethical frameworks that honor cultural plurality within universal human rights principles.

The Society & AI Lab exists as a Scholarly Commons for Society-Centered AI design and deployment.
